Media and Public Advisory – Results from Recent Sampling for Plutonium Contamination Around the Los Alamos National Lab

What:  Dr. Michael Ketterer, Professor Emeritus of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Northern Arizona University, will release results from his recent sampling for plutonium contamination around the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Following his ~twenty minute presentation, members of the media will be given priority for Q&A. We welcome members of the public as well.

When:  11:00 am MT Thursday August 15

Brief background:  LANL will spend at least $8 billion over the next 5 years to expand the production of plutonium “pit” bomb cores for the new nuclear arms race, which will cause more contamination and radioactive wastes. In contrast, funding for cleanup of past radioactive and toxic wastes is being cut. In April Nuclear Watch New Mexico released a map of plutonium contamination based on Lab data. In response, the Department of Energy categorically denied offsite plutonium migration, despite previously documented migration to the Rio Grande via San Ildefonso Pueblo lands. Dr. Ketterer will be releasing alarmingly high new results, including detections of some of the earliest plutonium known to humankind.
