Nuclear-Free Pueblo, Colorado Town Hall – This Thursday 10/13

Join the Nuclear-Free Pueblo Coalition on Thursday, October 13th from 6-8pm MT to hear from a virtual panel of experts why nuclear power is risky, expensive, and environmentally unjust. This will be a hybrid event that you can view in-person at Pueblo Community College, or online via Zoom.

As Colorado makes the necessary shift away from fossil fuels, Pueblo County Commissioners have proposed replacing a coal plant with a nuclear power plant.

While proponents of nuclear power tout it as a “clean” and “carbon-free” energy, nuclear power carries inherent risks that would threaten the Pueblo community for many generations to come. With the costs of renewable energy and battery storage technologies decreasing rapidly, nuclear power is by far neither the safest, nor the most cost-effective energy option.

This Town Hall will begin with a Keynote Presentation by Arjun Makhijani (Institute for Energy and Environmental Research) on why nuclear power is not a solution to the climate crisis, followed by a panel discussion featuring Jamie Valdez (Mothers Out Front), Cindy Folkers (Beyond Nuclear), David Schlissel (IEEFA), Ed Lyman (Union of Concerned Scientists), and Shaina Oliver (Moms Clean Air Force). Topics will include environmental justice implications, health impacts, security risks, and financial costs of nuclear power.

We hope that you will join the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center and the Nuclear-Free Pueblo Coalition for this Critical Event!
